Year Two – Mrs Saville

This term Year Two have been learning all about Space. The children are thoroughly enjoying researching facts about our Solar System and have produced a wide range of work covering all areas of the curriculum. We have been particularly impressed at how much information many of them have brought in from home to enhance the work we are doing.

As well as a completing a range of factual writing activities we are also developing the children’s creativity through story writing and composing their own poems about aliens and space adventures.

All of the year two children designed and then created their own clay alien which we will use later in the term to create our stop frame animation films.

Science investigations have included learning about the effects of gravity and observing how a range of simple rockets move and the distance they can travel. The children have collected and recorded a range of data during these investigations. This has really given them the opportunity to demonstrate how they can use numeracy skills in other areas of the curriculum.

The children were very keen to support the Children in Need charity and decided that they would like to make cakes to sell to raise money. They planned what they wanted to do, priced and bought the ingredients needed before making the cakes and decorating them in school. The children then sold their cakes on Friday 13th to raise an amazing £14 to add to the total collected by the whole school. We would like to say a big thank you to all of the parents who supported their children by buying cakes on the day

We continue to enjoy our monthly assemblies led by the ladies and gentlemen from the Churches in Caerleon. We also very much enjoyed visiting Lodge Farm Church to discuss how and why Harvest Festival is celebrated. The Year 1 and 2 children sang beautifully and as ever their exemplary behaviour made all of the staff very proud.

We still have lots of different things planned for the rest of the term and look forward to sharing our work with the children’s parents and families.

We are beginning to assign roles for the Christmas concert. As well as the Carol Concert at St Cadoc’s Church, Year 1 and 2 will be performing the play ‘Christmas with the Aliens’ for their families. We would be very grateful if you could help your child learn any lines they might bring home. Information about the parts they will play and the costumes they will need will be sent home as soon as possible.
