Fixed-penalty Notices

Fixed-penalty Notices

As you will be aware, the Local Authority has adopted a code of conduct for fixed penalty notices, which came into effect in 2014 . Newport City Council does not support absence from school (especially holiday absence) and encourages Headteachers not to authorise any holiday absences.

Our school agrees 5 days (10 sessions) of holidays for pupils in a school year where the pupil’s attendance is over 90% for the rolling year and a request has been made to the school ahead of taking a holiday. Days taken without prior authorisation may be recorded as unauthorised absence. All holiday absences in excess of 5 school days throughout the school year will be unauthorised.

A fixed penalty notice may be issued to parents if 5 school days (10 sessions) are lost due to unauthorised absence. This is consecutive days or sporadic days. If a fixed penalty is awarded to the parent, it is likely to be kept on their record.  The school has adopted the Local Authority policy on fixed penalty notices.
